Burton Scrap Mental!

Published on: 17th November, 2009

Another year and another Scrap Metal event, this time, a solitary evening of shred from the Burton Crew. What would they have in store for us this time round?

Past Scrap Metals have seriously tested riders with an array of inventive, and almost foolish features, to see what creative lines and straight up skills that riders can offer, FoTP wondered if this years event be any different and what crazyness would be out on the hill.

Arriving at the Hemel Snowcentre, we got our first glimpse at a park that was looking pretty epic. Two lines of features, with a wall ride positioned in the center of the hill, that could be ridden as part of each line. This night was going to go off!

The rookie line consisted of a down pipe, a raised car rail, and then another flat pipe, while the more advanced line was, well, crazy.

A huge side-on down bar complete with ‘donkey dick’ sat at the top of the line, followed by perhaps the most crazy rail the UK has ever seen. Down-flat-down, at three angles. Don’t get it, well check the photos and you’ll see. Finally, a double street rail set up with a smooth down bar and a double kink along side. A very nice setup, that had the riders attention as soon as they got onto the snow.

It was a busy night, and big shouts out to the park crew, who took time to maintain the features and keep the riders stoked. They were kept busy all night as the session took off in a big way for some of the best riding we have seen this year in the UK.

burton_thumbAlmost three hours of shred and the judges had chosen the finalists, from riders that had travelled from all over the country to session. From the South Coast, Scotland, Castleford, Manchester, this event had brought them in from far and wide.

The Tamworth crew, who finally arrived after an epic 5 hour car journey, wasted no time hitting up the course with 35 minutes to spare. Sean Miller going huge, boosting airs over the wall ride. He was a gnats chuff away from stomping frontflips off it as well, almost making the £1.50 a run totally worth it!

A fellow rider – we unfortunately didn’t get his name – stole the big air show, monster double grabs over the same wall ride, which developed into a solid grabbed 3. This session was amped and had started to show some teeth.

The final however was another story. We always knew it was going to be a hot one, with the likes of Tom Hunt, Gazza Andrews and Jonny Russell involved…but this was the Scrap Metal, and true to form, you should always expect the unexpected.

First we got to mention Ollie Waters. Far away from his usual slope in Wales, he was throwing down with hard way 270 onto the down bar, making it look so, so simple to make the final.

Hemel Local, Edward CH, had an inspired night, with a boardslide 270 out of the crazy kink, that was sublime, bagged him a final place and the best unsponsored rider award for the night.

Si Foster took £50 and third place with a faultless run, including a sweet as wall ride to board slide tap out, that was lazier than a summer Sunday afternoon.

George Wooley casually stepped up to take second place with a spotless run, including a front 1 on, 50-50 switch up, 360 out of the crazy kink, which was worth the huge cheers from the other riders looking on. The way he put down his tricks was almost like a robot. Perfect.

But when the heat is on, you can’t stop Jonny Russell. He coolly put down a stunning run, front 50-50 on the donkey dick, boardslide 270 out, down the crazy kink and then a totally locked out backside 360 on to the down bar. Insane, and £200 in the pocket.

There were plenty of other notable areas to the night…Andy Nudds’ 450 off the bottom kink in the final, Gazza Andrews front 3 out of the ‘donkey dick’, and Katie Ormerod, who took the time to learn a new trick for her final run. Front blunt 270 out, gave her girls prize on the night.

It was without doubt, an insane night of shred. The Scrap Metal had stepped up again. Just what is it going to be like next year!
