Hemel local and Summer comp favourite Lon Canu has been ripping up the UK’s slopes for quite a few years now, throwing down and getting those tricks on lock. So we thought it was about time he got a shout out for those efforts and some wily shred skills. Dropping in this week is Lon Canu!
Big thanks to Jools Smith for the fine images of Lon!
So, hit us with the basics; where do you normally shred in the UK and with who?
I love to shred everywhere and any surface. But I do have a soft spot for the Warmwell dryslope. Kev and all the locals always look after me. But it’s a bit of a trek for me so I don’t go as often as I would like.
What gets you stoked, park riding, pow, street stuff or something else?
To be honest, riding gets me stoked, but if I had to choose, park would come up winner every time.
What have you been up to these past 12 months? (What contest and where shredding abroad).
That’s a bit of a sore point, at the start of last season I broke my Tibia and Fibula, wrecking most of my winter. So as soon as I recovered in March I went straight back into riding, and after I had regained my confidence I went back into comps like The Farmers Jam, The British Snowtour and a few others… And a lot of media stuff with Jools Smith.
So what your plan then Lon? It seems like you have the world at your feet, you’ve already had Never-Summer ads in the UK magazines and you’ve got enough talent to make most kids sick with envy, where are you going to take snowboarding?
Yeah, I was so stoked with those pictures in Whitelines and Document. The credit should go to Jools for taking such dope pics. As for where I want to take snowboarding. I would like to take it to the moon.
Any dreams or goals?
To keep snowboarding, learning new tricks and having fun for years to come. Oh and one day learn how to control stuff with my mind.
How do you intend to make it happen?
To always make sure I have a good time, push my limits and try something new, definitely. As for the Mind control, I try to move pencils mentally every day.
Got a back up plan?
Drop out and join the circus.
So what’s cool in snowboarding right now? You down with following trends?
Well a lot of these snowboarders and skiers are wearing skinny trousers..not for me but I won’t discriminate, baggy and colorful all the way for me.
What’s the last trick you learnt?
Front 9 Stalefish.
Got any footy of it?? (Ha! Pressure question!!!)
I got them at Rossendale and I’m currently hunting down people with any footage of them…
How would you like to see the UK snowboard scene change? (What would you like to see happen? More/less contests… how can the Snowboard scene support the kids more?!!)
I would like to see the smaller children just starting up, getting hyped a bit more in competitions, it’s absolutely gut wrenching sometimes before you drop in and I think that these kids deserve to be praised for hitting rails and jumps much bigger than them, instead of ALL the concentration being on the older lot.
Difficult decisions. If you had to choose only one, which would you choose:
Rails or Kickers? -I do enjoy sliding on a dope rail but I am a Kicker boy for sure, I love flying through the air, defying gravity while trying to learn new tricks…just amazing.
Methods or hardway onto rails? – Oh that’s a hard one, Methods are just awesomely fun to throw out but I would probably say hardway onto rails, more danger, more reward.
Music or TV? – I chill out and listen to music a lot and also ride to it, so I would have to say music…but I do love watching shows like Family Guy. Stuff like that makes me laugh so much
Shredding dry or indoor? - Oh dryslope!, I love ridin’ outdoors and being able to set up pretty much anything that comes to mind with my fellow shredders
Babes or Boarding… but you HAVE TO CALL IT BOARDING!? – Boarding with the babes, haha!.
Filming or Contests? - Filming and pictures is more my thing…but I do love to take part in local comps.
Spins or Presses? – Spinny twizzlers, they rule!
Any Thankyous?
I would like to thank all my sponsors for their help and support; Never Summer, Destyn.Via, Alps Gear, UK Tall Tees, i360 Headwear, Jools Smith Photography, The Stoke Freeskiers for pushing me further and of course my extremely supportive parents.
Any death threats?
That Lon Canu guy, he really grinds my gears!!
